| Log 2 - San Juan Islands, WA See Photos Here Gumbo Ya-Ya and crew spent the month of August enjoying the beautiful weather and scenery in the San Juan Islands. During that time we visited with lots of friends and relatives who were either travelling on their own boats or travelling with us. After arriving at Friday Harbor, we spent some time visiting with our good friends Bert and Marilyn Dayton, who, until recently, lived on a house boat in the Harbor (they're currently in the process of moving ashore). We then travelled up to Reid Harbor, on Stuart Island, where we met Dean, Mary Anne and John Smith on the sailboat "Rua Hatu". We spent some time hiking on the island and catching alot more crab. We also spent time planning for our trip down the coast because Dean is planning to crew with us from Neah Bay to San Francisco. On the second day at Reid, our friends Brian, Jondra and Syna Stimpson (along with Brian's parents and sister) arrived on their boat "Thursday's Child". Later in the week Rua Hatu and Gumbo Ya-Ya travelled to Sucia Island, where we spent a very enjoyable time hiking on rocks and trails, catching more crab and visiting with Ken and Margaret and their sons from the sailboat "Discovery" - a boat we had travelled with extensively in the Sea of Cortez and mainland Mexico. We then returned to Friday Harbor, where we picked up Bert and Marilyn and sailed with them for a couple of days to Fisherman Bay on Lopez Island and Blind Bay on Shaw Island. You guessed it - more crab!! After returning to Friday Harbor, we picked up Jherek and his girlfriend, Jenny and headed back up to Reid Harbor. While there, we did a long hike out to the light house and a shorter hike that did a loop along one side of the harbor. Its always great having Jherek on board because he's great crew and keeps us laughing continually. And it turns out that Jenny is a natural sailor who write long letters while bouncing around in powerboat wakes. We dropped Jherek and Jenny off at the ferry dock on Shaw Island (at Blind Bay) and then met up with Kurt's brother Karl and his wife Leslie and, of course, Woody. Karl and Leslie have an identical boat to Gumbo Ya-Ya, but it floats about 8 inches higher in the water! We had a great time visiting with them and, of course, eating more crab. (We finally gave the crab trap to Karl because we're leaving crabbing waters and Kurt doesn't think he can eat anymore crab for at least 6 months!) We're currently back in Friday Harbor where we are getting the boat ready to head down the coast (pulling out the proper charts, checking over the engine, etc.). We plan to start looking for a weather window to head out to Neah Bay starting the last week in August, and hope to turn the corner sometime before Labor Day. Hopefully by then we'll have the "Position Reporter" problems ironed out so that you will be able to see where we are. |
